Jon Cattapan's work addresses the urban environment and its social narrative; central to his practice is a concern with the way in which humans negotiate space and territories. His paintings are made in response to his direct environment, and he has a wealth of stories to tell. Cattapan is interested in sport as both an urban phenomenon and an expression of instinctive, tribal behaviour.
Jon Cattapan was born in Melbourne in 1956, where he currently lives and works. Since the early 1980s, he has held more than forty solo, collaborative and two-person exhibitions and his work has been shown widely in group exhibitions in Australia and overseas.
