Rendered in oil and enamel on the reverse side of glass, Jolly's paintings establish a compelling encounter between the luminous depth of painterly space and the mirror-like surfaces of screen culture. His subject matter reflects times, places and events that he has experienced personally. Melbourne-born and based, Jolly has declared an interest in the social context of the contested ground and envisages the territorial markings made on sporting grounds during the course of a game as political and social metaphors.
David Jolly was born in Melbourne in 1972, where he continues to live and work. Jolly has held more than ten solo exhibitions, and in 2006 undertook a one-year residency in Malaysia.
