During her thirty-year art practice Anne Zahalka has worked to challenge the iconographic Australian images that have come to define us. From the stereotype of the golden athlete to the bushman and pioneer, she has created a range of alternative images to represent the diverse Australian population. Zahalka works with familiar images of our nation and subverts them with a humorous and critical edge.
Zahalka was born in Sydney in 1957. Since 1986, she has held more than forty solo exhibitions. Recent highlights include the survey Hall of mirrors: Anne Zahalka portraits 1987-2007 at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne, and touring nationally.
