ABOUT THE PRIZE
Art and artists reflect on the big issues, the passions, histories, rituals and values of Australian people. They tease out the hidden themes in activities we take for granted, recalling the forgotten stories. They latch on to the telling moments, or that pivotal event - bring our emotions, beliefs and prejudices into focus.
The Basil Sellers Art Prize is designed to do just this, encouraging Australian contemporary artists to reflect and engage with one of the central elements of our cultural and social life - sport.
Whether 'sport' is interpreted as tiddlywinks, or oblique references are made through more commonly shared experiences such as obsession, fanaticism or to 'win at all costs', the prize encourages a dynamic and critical reflection of all forms of sport and sporting culture in Australia.
Offering $100,000 to a single outstanding work of art, the prize is acquisitive, and will be supported by an exhibition at the Ian Potter Museum of Art, the University of Melbourne.
Entries are invited from contemporary artists across Australia, with a shortlist of artists selected by a distinguished panel of judges in September 2007.
These chosen artists will be invited to submit works for the inaugural prize and exhibition, opening July 2008.
It is hoped this prize will support the continuing development of the winning artists work, encourage a wider discussion and experience, and liberate sport and art from their opposing corners in the cultural landscape.
The prize has been initiated and generously underwritten by Basil Sellers because of his passion for art and sport.
